Dear Participants,
The HSE Global Scholarship Competition has been traditionally held in October, making it a long-standing practice at our institution.
In October, platforms in various countries opened to hold the Competition. Talented learners had the opportunity to test their mettle in a setting with equal conditions, that is, under strict monitoring, combined with clear and transparent procedures, applicable to everyone.
It was our deepest hope that this year’s Competition would go ahead as usual despite the current pandemic.
We carefully monitored the pandemic as it spread globally, as well as held surveys and discussions, crossing our fingers that we could still hold the event this year.
Sadly, however, our hopes were dashed. Even though the situation seemed to stabilize in April/May, we still couldn’t risk the Competition participants’ and organizers’ health by gathering them on the same premises to hold face-to-face events.
Therefore, for the current academic year, HSE University has been forced to break with tradition.
With this in mind, we have decided to reschedule the GSC-2021 competitions for January 21-26 of next year.
As noted above, we are unable to hold the HSE Global Scholarship Competition in person in October of 2020.
Sure, we had another option – holding all competition stages online. However, to go with this means to be in violation of the principles for conducting the GSC.
We have always been in favour of making the HSE Global Scholarship Competition accessible while also ensuring the equal rights of all participants. At present, stable Internet access is not available in all countries and we are quite unsure that this situation will rectify itself by October. Depriving participants from these countries of the chance to be entitled to the privileges of winners would be unfair. And we are always for a fair competition.
Furthermore, the experience of distance learning has shown that online examinations can be a major headache for learners, who don’t have access to all necessary online instruments. In order to take part in competitions online, it’s crucial to be confident not only in one’s own knowledge but also technical resources, which can be unreliable at times. So, we don’t want to subject anybody to additional stress. After all, 2020 hasn’t been the easiest of years.
We are unwilling to risk the health and safety of everybody involved and reduce the objectivity of our assessments of competition works. That’s why the HSE Global Scholarship Competition will be held at the start of 2021.
This wasn’t an easy decision for us. However, this change in schedule will in no way adversely affect the admission of talented learners to HSE University for the 2021/2020 academic year.
Online registration for GSC – 2021 will be open until January 11, 2021 (inclusive). The individual competitions will be held in both online and offline formats from January 21 until January 26. The Competition results will be published by March 1, 2021.
The Competition’s team of organizers is grateful for your understanding. In addition, we will attempt to launch additional resources to help prepare better for the competition events, so that you can achieve the best results.
